A Climate School for children officially opened within the Korgalzhyn State Nature Reserve.
The initiative is supported by the Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Over the course of 10 days, 20 students and teachers from eight regions of Kazakhstan will engage in hands-on learning about climate change adaptation, renewable energy technologies, and the rich biodiversity of the unique Tengiz-Korgalzhyn region.
The Climate School is part of a broader initiative under the Korgalzhyn Environmental Observatory, funded through the 7th phase of the GEF SGP–UNDP programme. With the support of the grant, the observatory has already installed a solar power station that fully supplies energy to the school’s education facility, as well as heat pumps in the residential building and a wind turbine.
During the opening event, UNDP also provided teachers with 10 updated “Climate Boxes” — educational kits containing teaching materials and practical guides for climate change education. These resources aim to help students better understand environmental challenges and inspire them to take action to protect the planet.
