  • Astana Reservoir Gets First Deep Clean in 55 Years

A cleanup initiative set to transform the capital’s water supply system has officially launched by presidential order.

Astana has begun its first major cleaning of the namesake reservoir in 55 years. The large-scale project, initiated by the Head of State, aims to increase the volume of water available for the city’s needs.

Modern Equipment for a Strategic Facility

The work is being carried out by the Akmola branch of Kazvodkhoz with support from the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. Two high-performance machines are involved: a dredger with a hydraulic ripper capable of processing up to 2,000 cubic meters per hour, and a multifunctional amphibious dredger with a capacity of up to 900 cubic meters per hour.

By the end of October 2025, 50,000 tons of silt are expected to be removed from the reservoir bed. The cleaning will continue annually over a 13-year period. Upon completion, the reservoir’s capacity will increase by 47 million cubic meters, significantly improving the capital’s water supply.

“To carry out the President’s directive, a dedicated team of specialists has been assembled. All team members have completed the necessary training to operate the specialized equipment. The Astana Reservoir is a strategic facility that plays a vital role in the capital’s water supply. Thanks to modern technology, we can now undertake the first large-scale cleanup of the reservoir in over 50 years, and do so effectively,” said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.
